Everything changes - but some things stay the same ...

It is now some five years since we first heard the beguiling claim that property in Bulgaria could be bought for less than the price of a second hand car. Various attributions to the origin of this somewhat innovative sales-pitch have been bandied around for years - but the general consensus is that it was a genuine portrayal of the extremely low cost of rural and village houses in Bulgaria from Mihail Chobanov, MD of leading real estate agent, Bulgarian Properties

It seems that this was supported in the Sunday Times article of May 2007, "No Mortgage Required", by Property Journalist Graham Norwood, who visited Bulgarian Properties and noted that "... despite surging markets around the world, there are still places where you can pick up something habitable for the price of the average family car. With a wide range of village houses from just £5,000, rural Bulgaria is a good place to start."

And today, even after several years of rocketing real estate prices, Bulgaria's transition to full EU membership and the biggest economic downturn that most of will experience in our lives, it's still true ...
