Winter tourist numbers and revenue up ...

Bulgaria's ski resorts experienced a 7.8% increase in the number of foreign tourists in January and February.

Figures released today by the Ministry of Tourism show that visits were up in the first two months compared with the same period in 2010.

Overall, more than 437000 foreign tourists arrived in this period, the two strongest months for ski resorts. People taking skiing vacations numbered 273000, an increase of almost 30% over 2009, while business trips fell slightly to just over 85000. The remainder of visitors were here on private visits, including property viewing trips

According to the statistics published on Monday, visitors from Macedonia and Serbia increased considerably, following the launch of the visa-free initiative with Bulgaria which took effect in late December 2010.

Macedonians made 44000 visits in the first tow months of the year, a 41% growth compared with 2009. Serbs also increased their visits by 45%, registering over 27000. The two principal sources for winter tourists to Bulgaria - Britain and Russia - recorded increases of 3% and 24% respectively.

Bulgaria's revenue from international tourism in January amounted to 103.9 million Euro an increase of 8.2% over the same month of 2010.
