Bulgaria heads the ranking for the lowest price of consumer goods at 51% of the EU average, with Denmark being the most expensive country at 143%. Other expensive countries include Luxembourg and Sweden at 120%, Ireland at 118%, Belgium and France at 112% and the UK at 100%.
Significantly, Bulgaria also leads the field in each of the categories examined, namely: food and beverages; alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing; consumer electronics; personal transport equipment; restaurants and hotels.
For comparative purposes, the study looked at the cost of living in the 27 EU member states and in a number of other european countries. Overall, the most expensive countries, Switzerland at 148% and Norway at 147% - and the cheapest, Albania at 50% and Macedonia at 44%, are all non-EU members. The next cheapest EU countries are Bulgaria's neighbour Romania at 59%, followed by Lithuania and Poland, both at 63%.
Key findings show that alcohol and tobacco in Bulgaria are just 64% of the average prices, while food and non-alcoholic beverages are 66%. According to Eurostat, though, the most spectacular result in the survey is that restaurants and hotels in Bulgaria are priced at only 45% of the average for the EU.
